Origin and history

La Croix de chemin en pierre so-called Croix Gratien is a historical monument located in Chaumont, Haute-Marne department, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 1st quarter of the 16th century, this monumental cross is a typical example of Christian architecture of this period. It has been classified as historic monuments since 9 July 1909, reflecting its heritage and cultural importance.

The road crosses, such as the Gratian Cross, were often erected near roads or villages to mark a place of prayer, assembly or commemoration. In the 16th century, the Chaumont region, then integrated into Champagne, was marked by a rural and artisanal life, where these monuments played a spiritual and social role. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the daily life of local communities.

Today, the Gratian Cross is located at the Chemin du Val Barizien, an address referenced in the Mérimée base. Its state of conservation and its precise location, noted as "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), make it a significant part of Chaumont's heritage. It is protected as a classified element, which guarantees its preservation for future generations.
