Origin and history

La croix de chemin d'Aroffe is a monumental cross located in the village of Aroffe, in the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the second half of the 16th century, it is distinguished by its stone structure, composed of a stone pedestal in masonry, a cylindrical column decorated with sculptures (including a Saint Nicholas on foot), and a capital supporting a carved group representing a Christ in cross surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John. The ensemble peaks at a height of 3.70 metres, making it an important part of the local landscape.

The cross is located outside the village, rue de la Chalète, on the road leading to the wood of the Feys. This type of monument, typical of rural areas, often served as a landmark or a place of devotion for travellers and residents. The cross of paths were also symbols of protection and piety, reflecting the importance of religion in the daily life of communities in modern times.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 14 June 1909, this cross bears witness to the religious and artistic heritage of Lorraine. Its state of conservation and its historical value make it a remarkable part of the local heritage, protected and enhanced by the authorities. The cross belongs today to the municipality of Aroffe, which ensures its preservation.
