Stone road cross of the 16th century: classification by decree of 20 July 1908

Origin and history

The Rollainville Road Cross is a historic monument located in the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 16th century, it is characteristic of the stone road crosses erected at that time, often for religious or commemorative purposes. This type of monument served as a landmark for travellers and pilgrims, while marking the sacred space in the countryside.

Ranked by ministerial decree on 20 July 1908, this cross is now owned by the commune of Rollainville. Its location, reported at the approximate address of 177 Morea Way, reflects a typical rural location of the Vosges. Although its geographical accuracy is considered mediocre (note of 5/10), it remains an architectural and historical testimony of medieval and modern Lorraine.

At the time of its construction in the 16th century, the region was marked by a rural society organized around agriculture, crafts and local exchanges. The cross of paths played a social and spiritual role, punctuating the landscapes and recalling the presence of the Christian faith in the daily life of the communities. Their preservation, like that of Rollainville, illustrates the territories' attachment to their material and intangible heritage.
