Key figures
Matthieu de Saulcy - Priest of Chamesol
Sponsor of the cross in 1699.
Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Chamesol is a baroque stone work erected in 1699, near the village church, in the Doubs department. It is distinguished by its twisted column, a rare style in the region, and a central medallion adorning the cross. His base bears a Latin inscription dedicated to the parish priest Matthew of Saulcy, initiator of his construction.
Ranked a historic monument in 1996 after a first inscription in 1989, this cross illustrates the art of Counter-Reform. Its doric capitals and arms ended with ribbed balls reflect the stylistic influence of the time. The inscription on the base explicitly mentions his sponsor: Father Matthew of Saulcy, parish priest of Chamesol.
The monument is part of the local religious heritage, typical of cemetery crosses or paths erected to mark the sacred space. Its baroque style, marked by ornamentation and movement, contrasts with the usual sobriety of the rural crosses of Franche-Comté. The date of 1699, engraved at its base, makes it a precise testimony of religious art of the late seventeenth century.
Owned by the commune, the cross is now protected and accessible near the church of Saint Georges. Its ranking among historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its aesthetics and for its inscription in local history.
