Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Colombiers, located in the Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a 17th-century monument. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1926 and belongs to the municipality. Its inscription on the base indicates that it was overthrown and re-edited in 1841, as evidenced by the engraved mention: "the cross was overthrown and re-edited in 1841".
This type of cross, typical of rural cemeteries, served both as a religious symbol and a landmark for funeral processes. In the 17th century, villages like Colombiars were organized around their church and cemetery, central places of community and spiritual life. Cemetery crosses often marked the entrance of sacred spaces and reminded the faithful of their faith.
The location of the cross at 46 Rue de la Verne is estimated as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10) based on available data. Although its geographical accuracy is not perfect, it remains a historic landmark for the village. No information is available about its author or the exact circumstances of its original creation, but its inscription in 1926 underscores its heritage importance.
