Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Malguenac is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name in Brittany. It dates from the 17th century, as evidenced by its architectural and stylistic characteristics. This type of cross, often erected in cemeteries or near churches, served both as a religious landmark and as a symbol of piety for local inhabitants. The materials used, mainly granite, reflect the resources available in the region.

The foundation of the cross is adorned with coarse sculptures depicting scenes of the Passion of Christ, suggesting a commemorative and educational function for the faithful. A granite dice supports the barrel, on which is carved a Pieta mutilated, surmounted by a dais. The cross itself, appearing the Christ on one side and the Virgin with the Child on the other, is richly decorated with shields. According to the assumptions, it could have dominated a calvary, a monumental ensemble typical of Brittany.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 8 May 1933, this cross today belongs to the commune of Malguénac. Its state of conservation and the details of its sculptures make it a precious testimony of Breton religious art of the seventeenth century. The approximate location, near the church of Malguenac, strengthens its anchor in the local historical and cultural landscape.
