Origin and history

The Cemetery Cross of Reguiny is an emblematic monument located in the cemetery of the village of Reguiny, in the department of Morbihan, Brittany. Dated from the 16th century, it is representative of the Breton cemetery crosses of this period, often decorated with symbolic motifs related to death and Christian religion. Its architecture, with an octagonal barrel and a carved capital, illustrates the know-how of the artisans of the time, mixing religious function and artistic expression.

The cross was re-edited in 1738, suggesting that it had undergone significant alterations or restoration on that date, while retaining its original elements. It is adorned with remarkable sculptures, like two cross shingles and a head of death on the capital, as well as heads at the corners of the square base. The summit represents Christ surrounded by two characters, while on the reverse is the Virgin, all overcome by a brace. These iconographic details highlight its role both as a memorial and as a teacher in the local community.

Classified as historical monuments since May 15, 1925, the Cemetery Cross of Reguiny is a valuable testimony to the Breton funerary heritage. Its official protection reflects its historical and artistic importance, as well as the desire to preserve these buildings charged with religious and cultural symbols. Today, it remains a central element of the Reguiny cemetery, recalling the link between the living and the dead in Christian tradition.

The cross is the property of the commune of Reguiny, which attests to its anchoring in local life. Its exact address, 14 Rue Guy Ropartz, allows to situate it precisely in the village. Although the information about his visit is not detailed, his status as a historical monument makes him a point of interest for those passionate about sacred art and regional history. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in the Morbihan heritage landscape.
