Origin and history
The cemetery cross of St. Allwestre is a historical monument located in the village of St. Allwestre, Morbihan (Brittany). Dated from 1774, it is located in the former cemetery. His inscription as a historic monument on March 30, 1934, bears witness to his heritage value. The cross is composed of a base adorned with a high relief representing an angel and the Virgin, evoking the Annunciation. The main face shows a crucifixion scene, while the reverse presents a Pieta surrounded by two characters, one of which might be Saint-Arnould.
Architecturally, the cross rests on a large granite barrel, supporting the sculptures. The bleacher bears the date of 1774, confirming its construction period. The base, conceived as an altar, incorporates a altar stone with the busts of the Virgin and the angel. This monument illustrates the Breton religious art of the eighteenth century, mixing Christian symbolism and local stone-cut know-how.
Owned by the commune, the cross is located on Rue Yves-de-Carné, near the old cemetery. Its state of conservation and location (estimated at 5/10) make it an important part of the heritage of Saint-Alloustre. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its historical and artistic importance in the region.
