Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Saint-Aubin, located at Saint-Aubin on the town of Plumelec (Morbihan), is an emblematic monument of the sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its building structure based on a cylindrical barrel, typical of the Breton Christian architecture of that time. On its faces are represented Christ on one side, and on the other, the Blessed Virgin with the Child, symbolizing the sacred duality of redemption and divine motherhood.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 25 September 1928, this cross illustrates the importance of funeral monuments in the Breton villages of the 16th century. These crosses served not only as religious landmarks, but also as gathering points for local ceremonies and processes. Their presence in cemeteries marked the anchoring of the Christian faith in the daily life of rural communities.
The cross of Saint Aubin is now owned by Plumelec. Its listing in the inventory of historic monuments reflects its historic and artistic value. The available data, notably via the Merimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its precise location at 6 Rue du Granit, although the GPS location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10).
