Origin and history
The Toussaint Cemetery Cross is an iconic monument located in the cemetery of the village of Toussaint, Normandy. Dated precisely from 1560, it embodies 16th century religious architecture, with a triangular base adorned with columns formerly surmounted by statues. The cross itself bears a representation of the crowned Virgin, typical of Christian iconography of the time.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of 18 October 1913, this cross illustrates the importance of religious symbols in medieval and reborn funeral spaces. Its triangular base supports three columns that visually structure the whole, while the cross dominates the building. The crowned Virgin, carved on one of her faces, highlights her role both as a memorial and as a spiritual one for the local community.
The monument, owned by the municipality of Toussaint, is today a material testimony of the religious and artistic history of the Seine-Maritime. Its early classification at the beginning of the twentieth century reflects its heritage value, while its location in the cemetery recalls its original use: marking a sacred place and gathering the faithful around a symbol of shared faith.
