Origin and history

The Sasseville Cemetery Cross is a 16th century stoneware monument, more precisely between 1530 and 1545 according to the studies of Abbé Cochet. Originally located in the village cemetery, it is now housed in the church of Notre-Dame-de-Sasseville. This monument is remarkable for its sculptures representing theological virtues as well as the instruments of the Passion of Christ.

The cross was classified as historical monuments on November 29, 1913, recognizing its heritage and artistic value. It is now the property of the commune of Sasseville, in the Seine-Maritime department, in the Normandy region. Its current location, inside the church, allows its preservation while remaining accessible to visitors.

The sculptures of the cross, typical of Renaissance religious art, illustrate the symbolic importance of this type of monument in the Norman villages of the sixteenth century. These crosses served as both a spiritual landmark for the faithful and a funeral marker in cemeteries, reflecting the religious beliefs and practices of the time.
