Origin and history
La Croix de Heuland, also known as the Rollon Cross, is a historic monument in the municipality of Heuland, Normandy. Dating from the 16th century, this cross of path lies precisely at the so-called crossroads of the Cross of Heuland. It was classified as a Historic Monument by order of 17 May 1933, which is evidence of its heritage and cultural importance.
The cross-roads, such as that of Heuland, were often erected at crossroads or along roads to mark a place of prayer, assembly or protection for travellers. These monuments played a central role in the daily lives of rural communities, serving as spiritual and geographical landmarks. The Normandy region, rich in medieval and religious history, has many examples of this type of heritage.
The precise location of the Heuland Cross is indicated in the Merimée base as being at the so-called crossroad of the Heuland Cross, with an approximate address at 5001 La Croix d'Heuland. The accuracy of this location is considered very satisfactory, which facilitates its identification and visit. The cross is now owned by the municipality of Heuland, which ensures its preservation and maintenance.
