Kerdrebeil Cross (Case A 219): entry by order of 9 November 1984
Origin and history
La Croix de Kerdreboil is a monumental granite cross located in the commune of Saint-Gelven, in the Côtes-d'Armor department, Brittany. It dates mainly from the 17th century, although its claw base may date back to the 16th century. The cross is carved on its north and south faces, representing Christ on the cross surrounded by Saint John and the Virgin. These sculptures are typical of the Breton religious art of the time, mixing symbolism and local craftsmanship.
The structure of the cross rests on an octagonal monolith, itself placed on a clawed base, which rests on a rectangular seat. This type of base, older, suggests a reuse or transformation of a pre-existing monument. The cross is a remarkable example of Breton Christian architecture, combining simplicity of shapes and richness of carved details.
The Kerdrebeil Cross was registered as a historical monument by order of 9 November 1984. This protection recognizes its heritage and historical value, as well as its importance in the cultural landscape of Brittany. It is located precisely in Kerdreboil, a place called Bon Repos on Blavet, which makes it a point of interest for visitors to the region.
Although the sources do not explicitly mention its original use, this type of cross was generally erected for religious or commemorative purposes, often in connection with pilgrimage routes or important crossroads. The presence of Saint John and the Virgin alongside Christ underscores her devotional character, probably linked to local practices of popular piety.
Available data indicate that the exact location of the cross is approximate, with an accuracy considered poor (level 5 out of 10). This may be due to changes in communal boundaries or imprecise historical surveys. Despite this, the cross remains a cultural and historical landmark for the municipality of Saint-Gelven and its surroundings.
No information is available about the sponsors or artisans who made this cross. However, its style and characteristics suggest that it was carved by local artisans, in keeping with the Breton artistic traditions of the modern era.
