Cross of the fountain Saint-Georges : classification by decree of 14 April 1942
Origin and history
The cross of the fountain Saint-Georges is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Étourvy, in the department of the Aube, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 16th century, this stone cross bears witness to religious architecture and local traditions of the era. It is associated with a fountain, often linked to devotional practices or sacred sources in medieval and renaissant countryside.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 14 April 1942, this cross illustrates the heritage importance accorded to modest but representative religious buildings in French rural history. Its location, near the Quincerot road, suggests a possible role as a landmark or assembly place for the inhabitants and pilgrims. Like many such crosses, it could mark a secondary place of worship, a territorial limit, or commemorate a local event.
At the time of its construction, in the 16th century, the Aube region was marked by a mainly agricultural economy, with villages organized around the Church and local lords. Crosses and fountains played a social and spiritual role, serving as meeting points, symbolic protection against epidemics or weather, and support for popular piety. Their preservation until today reflects communities' commitment to their heritage and collective memory.
