Cross, on the road to Escoublac: inscription by decree of 18 August 1944

Origin and history

La Croix de la Ville au Jau is a cross located in Saint-André-des-Eaux, in the Loire-Atlantique department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Dating from the 15th century, it is located on the Escoublac road, close to the city centre. This monument, typical of the road crosses of this period, bears witness to the importance of religious symbols in the medieval public space.

The cross was listed as historical monuments by order of 18 August 1944. This official protection underscores its heritage value and its role in local history. It is now owned by the commune of Saint-André-des-Eaux, although there is no information on its accessibility or current use.

In the 15th century, cross-roads often served as landmarks for travellers, places of prayer or commemoration. In the country of Guérande, where Saint-André-des-Eaux is located, these monuments were also linked to local religious practices and pilgrimages. Their presence reflected the social and spiritual organization of the rural communities of the time.
