Origin and history
La Croix de Lavans-Vuillafans is a limestone calvary built in the 16th century. A height of 3 meters, it represents Christ on the cross and stands in the centre of the village, at the intersection of the departmental road 392 and Bernard Bez street. This monument, typical of road crosses, was intended to mark a sacred space or an important crossroads.
According to local oral tradition, this calvary had a protective function for crops, reflecting religious beliefs and agricultural practices of the time. Crosses of this type were often erected to invoke a divine blessing on the surrounding fields, in an area where agriculture was the main economic activity.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 8 January 1936, the cross is now owned by the municipality of Lavans-Vuillafans. Its ranking reflects its heritage importance and historical value, particularly as an example of 16th century rural religious art. No information is available on any sponsors or artisans involved in its construction.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its precise location at approximately 2 Rue Bernard Bez, as well as its Insee communal code (25331) linking the monument to the Doubs department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. No mention is made of an opening to the public or of a specific contemporary use.
