Stone cross once located in the Notre-Dame cemetery, currently in the church: inscription by decree of 19 March 1927

Origin and history

The Cross of Manosque is a stone cross from the 1st quarter of the 16th century. It was once located in the Notre-Dame de Manosque cemetery, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Today, it is kept inside the church of the city, after being moved.

The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 19 March 1927. This classification reflects its heritage importance and historical value to the municipality. It is currently owned by the city of Manosque, although its exact location in the religious building is not specified in the available sources.

At the time of its construction, in the early 16th century, Manosque was a city marked by an active religious life, integrated into Provence County. Cemetery crosses, like this one, played a strong symbolic role, marking sacred spaces and serving as a landmark for community processions or gatherings. These monuments also reflected the local crafts and beliefs of the time, often related to the protection of the deceased and popular piety.
