Origin and history

La Croix de Montigny-lès-Vesoul is a historic monument located in the commune of Montigny-lès-Vesoul, Haute-Saône (70). It was erected at the beginning of the 17th century, specifically in the 1st quarter of the 17th century, as indicated by its engraved date of 1622. This stone cross is a typical example of the religious monuments of that time, often placed at the entrances or exits of villages to mark a place of devotion or assembly.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 23 October 1913, this cross is protected for its heritage and historical interest. It is located at the northern end of the village, at the approximate address of 4 Rue de la Perugia. The location is considered satisfactory, with an accuracy of 7 out of 10. Owned by the commune, it shows the importance of religious symbols in the spatial and social organization of the villages of Franche-Comté in the seventeenth century.

The road crosses, such as that of Montigny-les-Vesoul, often served as landmarks for travellers, places of prayer or commemoration. Their presence reflected the piety of local communities and their attachment to religious traditions rooted in everyday life. These monuments were also meeting points for the inhabitants, thus strengthening social ties within the village.
