Pen-er-Pont cross on the isthmus of Locoal: inscription by decree of 29 March 1935

Origin and history

The cross of Pen-er-Pont is a granite road cross erected in the 17th century on the isthmus of Locoal in Locoal-Mendon, Morbihan. It is located near a vestige of the feudal period: the cross of Prostlom (or Men er Menah), Christianized in the 11th century, as evidenced by the cross and the engraved inscription Crux Prostlon. This site illustrates the superposition of religious periods and symbols.

The Pen-er-Pont Cross was listed as a historic monument on March 28, 1935, recognizing its heritage value. This type of monument, typical of Brittany, often served as a landmark or a place of devotion for travelers and local inhabitants. Its location near an older vestige highlights the continuity of cultural and religious practices in the region.

The site is also associated with a nearby lech (stele), reinforcing its archaeological and historical interest. The cross is part of a landscape marked by medieval and modern traces, reflecting the evolution of beliefs and uses of public spaces in Brittany over centuries.
