Origin and history

The cross of Penchâteau is a cross of road located at the place known as Penchâteau, in the commune of Pouliguen in the Loire-Atlantique. It dates from the 15th or 16th centuries and is on a plot, in front of the entrance to the chapel of Penchâteau. This type of monument often served as a religious landmark or symbol for local travellers and residents.

The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 18 October 1944. It belongs to the commune of Pouliguen and is part of the architectural and religious heritage of the Pays de la Loire region. Its location, near a chapel, suggests a role in local devotional practices.

Crossroads were common in Brittany and in western France at that time. They often marked crossroads, village entrances or places of pilgrimage, reflecting the importance of religion in the daily life of rural communities.
