14th century stone cross: by order of 3 April 1914

Origin and history

La croix de Rignieux-le-Franc is a cross of road in the Ain department, in the same name. This monument, dated from the 14th and 15th centuries, is distinguished by its immediate proximity to the Romanesque church Saint Paul, the monument to the dead The Victorious Poilu and the town hall. Its location suggests a central role in local life, probably as a spiritual landmark or gathering point for the inhabitants.

Classified as historical monuments in 1914, this cross illustrates the heritage importance of religious and commemorative buildings in French villages. Its early ranking at the beginning of the 20th century reflects a desire to preserve the physical traces of the medieval past and the rural history of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. No additional information is available on its sponsor, iconography or related specific events.

The cross is part of a landscape marked by other notable monuments, such as the Church of Saint Paul, bearing witness to an ancient human and religious occupation. Its status as a historical monument makes it a key part of the heritage of Rignieux-le-Franc, alongside other sites such as the medieval village of Peruges, located nearby in the same department of Ain.
