Origin and history

The Cross of Saint-Colombiar, located at Saint-Nolff in Morbihan, is a 16th century banner cross. It is located near the chapel of Saint-Colombiar and has a carved rectangular base. This historic monument, inscribed in 1929, is remarkable for its artistic and religious representations, typical of the late medieval period.

The front face of the cross illustrates the Resurrection, framed by a mitre character and a monk. To the right, Christ descending to limbos is surrounded by three evangelists. On the left, the cross bearing shows characters dressed in the fashion of the Valois, including the Virgin, Symon the Cyrenean, Christ, two men bound (perhaps the larrons) and a soldier. These scenes reflect the Christian iconographic traditions of the time.

The reverse of the cross presents an enigmatic scene with a monk, three knights and a turban character, framed by a pointed bonnet character and an evangelist. The original drum was replaced by a heavier barrel, while the upper table, between four columns (one missing), shows Christ on the cross between the Virgin and Saint John, as well as a Pietà. These details highlight the artistic and religious importance of the monument.

The location of the cross at 21bis Route de Saint-Colombiar is estimated with fair accuracy (5/10). Owned by the commune, it has been classified as a historical monument since 13 February 1929, under the cadastral reference D 47. This monument bears witness to art and religious devotion in Brittany in the 16th century.
