Stonestone cross, near the southern wall of the sacristy of the church (Box A 400): inscription by order of 18 August 1988

Origin and history

La Croix de Villers-au-Bois is a historical monument located in the commune of Villers-au-Bois, in the department of Pas-de-Calais (Hauts-de-France). Dating from the seventeenth century, this sandstone cross is located near the south wall of the sacristy of the local church. It was listed as a Historic Monument by ministerial decree on August 18, 1988, recognizing its heritage value and importance to local history.

The location of the cross is specified in the Mérimée base at the following address: 2 Rue de l'Église, 62144 Villers-au-Bois. Although the accuracy of this location is considered fair (note of 5/10), it clearly identifies its location in the village. The cross is the property of the commune, which underlines its anchoring in the communal heritage and its potential role in the religious or social life of the locality.

The monument is described as a sandstone cross, a material typical of the region and of the time. This type of monument, often erected near churches, could serve as a religious landmark, a symbol of protection or a memorial. Although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not specify its exact origin or sponsor, its listing as Historic Monuments demonstrates its historical and architectural interest.

In the 17th century, the Hauts-de-France region, and especially Pas-de-Calais, was an area marked by agricultural and artisanal activities. Crosses of this type were common in villages and played a role in structuring the religious and community space. They often served as a gathering point or place of prayer, reflecting the piety and local traditions of the time.
