Origin and history

The cross in front of the church of Vetheuil is a 16th century historical monument. It is located in the commune of Vétheuil, in the department of Val-d'Oise, in the region of Île-de-France. This type of monument, typical of church squares, often served as a religious and social landmark for the inhabitants of the village.

Ranked by ministerial decree on February 10, 1921, this cross is now owned by the municipality. The monuments of this type, erected during the Renaissance, often reflect the importance of the Christian faith in the organisation of French villages. Their presence before the churches also symbolized a gathering place for ceremonies and public announcements.

The location of the cross, the Church's place, is estimated with an accuracy deemed "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10). Available data are mainly from the Merimée database and sources such as Monumentum. No additional information on its sponsor or detailed history is mentioned in the accessible archives.
