Sixteenth century cross in Guyomarais (not cadastralized; public domain): registration by decree of 24 April 1926
Origin and history
The 16th century cross of Saint-Denoual is an emblematic monument located in the municipality of the same name in Brittany. Dating from the Renaissance, this cross is representative of the artistic and religious achievements of this period in the region. It is located precisely in Guyomarais, a place not cadastralized but identified as belonging to the public domain.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 24 April 1926, this cross is now owned by the Côtes-d'Armor department. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this 16th century vestige. Although little detail is available on its specific history, its existence reflects the role of monumental crosses in the religious and social life of Brittany at that time.
During the Renaissance, such crosses often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks, marked gathering places or crossroads, and embodied Christian faith in a rural context. Their presence in the Breton landscape illustrates the importance of religion in structuring local communities, as well as the know-how of the artisans of the period in stone carving and religious symbolism.
