Cross of 16s: inscription by decree of 13 February 1928
Origin and history
The 16th century cross in the Ageville Cemetery is a historic monument listed since 1928. This type of religious building, common in French countryside, bears witness to the importance of Christian symbols in the daily life of rural communities during the Renaissance. Its location in the cemetery highlights its commemorative and spiritual role for the inhabitants of the village.
In modern times, the villages of the East, like Ageville, were organized around agriculture and parish life. The cemetery crosses served as visual and spiritual landmarks, marking the sacred space while recalling the presence of the Church in the lives of the faithful. These monuments, often erected by local communities or donors, also reflected the craftsmanship of the time, such as stone carving or ornamental sculpture.
