The bas-relief representing the crucifixion placed on the footestal (Box AB 18): inscription by order of 30 May 1927

Origin and history

The cross of the village of Saint-Servant is a monumental cross located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Morbihan, Brittany. Dating from the 16th century, it was built in granite and is distinguished by a bas-relief carved on a unique stone, representing the Crucifixion. This bas-relief, probably from an older altarpiece (15th century), shows Christ on a cross surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John, with two angels collecting his blood in a chalice. The current cross, including this re-use, dates from the second half of the 19th century.

The cross was inscribed as historical monuments on May 30, 1927, specifically for its bas-relief, which constitutes a remarkable artistic and religious testimony. The monument is located on the church square, in the heart of the village, and its base in stone supports a large cast iron cross. The ensemble illustrates the evolution of local artistic and devotional practices, combining medieval elements and more recent additions.

According to available sources, the 15th century bas-relief, integrated with the 19th century cross, presents precise iconographic details: Christ wears a long pagne, his feet are superimposed with an internal bending of the right foot, and the scene is framed by a roof-shaped moulding. This type of representation reflects the Breton artistic traditions of the time, where the monumental Calvaries and Crosses played a central role in religious and community life.

The location of the cross, at approximately 2 Rue du Moulin de Meslan, is indicated with average accuracy (level 5/10). The monument belongs to the municipality of Saint-Servant and remains accessible to the public, although information on the modalities of the visit is not detailed. Its state of conservation and its integration into the urban landscape testify to its local heritage importance.
