Origin and history
The Cross of the Carrefour Deux-Ponts, also known as the Guyot Cross of Bezon, is located at Bezon, in the commune of Ploërmel, Morbihan. This monument consists of two monolithic granite crosses, unequal heights, erected on the same base and dating from the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries. Their particularity lies in their hexagonal drums and arms, as well as in the engraved symbols: five dots on one (representing the wounds of Christ) and one square on the other, professional emblem of Guyot, carpenter in Bezon.
The two crosses were built for Guyot, a local craftsman whose work as a carpenter is evoked by the presence of a square engraved on the highest cross. Their sober style, marked by chamfered ties and minimalist décor, reflects the religious architectural traditions of Brittany of the modern era. These crosses, typical of crossroads or places, often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks in the countryside.
Ranked as historical monuments since May 30, 1927, the Bezon Guyot crosses illustrate the funeral and religious heritage of Brittany. Their official protection underscores their historical and artistic value, while at the same time testifying to the importance of the crossroads or crossroads in the Breton cultural landscape. Their approximate location, near Rue des Croix Guyot, makes it an important part of the local heritage of Ploërmel.
