Cross of the Chemin de Coëtcandec (Box B 142): inscription by order of 13 May 1937

Origin and history

The cross of the way to Coëtcandec is a religious monument located in Locqueltas, Morbihan (British). Dated from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its slender octagonal barrel and its cross arms with hollowed corners in rounded lobes. This type of cross, typical of Breton Christian architecture, often served as a landmark or symbol of devotion for travelers and local inhabitants.

The cross is located on the road to Bignan, opposite the sports field of Locqueltas. It was listed as historic monuments on 13 May 1937, recognizing its heritage value. Today, it belongs to the commune and remains a testimony of religious art and local history of this period.

In the 16th century, Brittany was marked by strong agricultural activity and a social fabric organized around parishes. The cross of paths, like that of Coëtcandec, played a role both spiritual and practical, marking territorial boundaries, guiding pilgrims or recalling Christian beliefs in a rural landscape still very marked by religion.
