Origin and history
The cross of Moussages is a monumental cross located in the cemetery of the village of Moussages, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the 15th century, it consists of a granite column surmounted by a small cross with a flowered arms. The crucified Christ is represented there, accompanied by two figures, probably the Virgin and Saint John, with a sign inclined above him.
The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 26 November 1935. This type of monument, typical of medieval Christian architecture, often served as a spiritual and commemorative landmark in villages. The cemetery crosses, like that of Mussages, marked a sacred place and reminded the faithful of the divine presence in the heart of the community.
The granite structure reflects local stone carving techniques and the artistic influences of the period. The flowered arms and carved figures bear witness to the artisanal know-how of the 15th century, when religious art occupied a central place in the daily life of the rural populations of Auvergne.
