Origin and history

The cross of the cemetery of Authie is a historical monument located in the municipality of Authie, in the department of Calvados, Normandy. Dating from the 18th century, it is distinguished by its stone twisted column, surmounted by a partially damaged cross, having lost its upper branch. This type of monument, typical of the rural cemeteries of the time, served both as a religious symbol and as a visual landmark for the inhabitants.

The cross was listed as historic monuments by order of 18 March 1927, thereby recognizing its heritage value. It shares this status with other elements of the local heritage, such as the bell tower and the southern portal of Saint-Vigor Church, classified since 1913. The cross, owned by the commune, bears witness to the craftsmanship and funeral practices of Lower Normandy in the Enlightenment century.

At that time, Authie, a rural village in Calvados, was marked by a predominantly agricultural economy, where religious monuments played a central role in community life. The cemetery crosses, often erected near the churches, served as places of recollection and marking the sacred space. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Catholic faith in the social and spiritual organization of the Norman villages.
