Cemetery Cross (Box A 681): inscription by order of 8 January 1964
Origin and history
The cross of Prestan Cemetery is a religious monument located in the commune of Prestan, Brittany, more precisely rue de l'Église. Dating from the 15th century, it is distinguished by its sculptures adorning the cross and the symbols of the Evangelists depicted on its base. This type of monument, typical of medieval Christian art, served as both a spiritual landmark and a funeral marker in cemeteries.
The cross was officially recognized for its heritage value and listed as historical monuments by an order dated 8 January 1964. This legal protection underlines its historical and artistic importance, while ensuring its preservation for future generations. It is now owned by the municipality of Plestan, in the department of Côtes-d-Armor.
The medieval cemetery crosses, such as the one in Prestan, played a central role in the religious and social life of the Breton communities. They served as a gathering place for ceremonies, support for devotion, and symbol of the divine presence in the heart of the villages. Their iconography, often rich in detail, reflected the theological beliefs and knowledge of the time.
