Sixteenth century cemetery cross, stone: classification by decree of 9 July 1909

Origin and history

The cross of the Heuilley-le-Grand Cemetery is a historical monument erected at the beginning of the 16th century, more precisely dated 1526 thanks to an inscription engraved on its base. The latter, of square shape, supports a column adorned with a capital decorated with volutes and angel heads, surmounted by a cross with flowered ends. A Christ is carved on the east side, while a small altar, composed of a table on two columns, is placed in front of the base. The ensemble, in stone, illustrates the funeral and religious art of the Renaissance in Champagne-Ardenne.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 9 July 1909, this cross belongs to the commune of Heuilley-le-Grand, in the department of Haute-Marne. Its state of conservation and its approximate location (5 Bis Rue de la Mairie) make it a rare testimony to the local commemorative and artistic practices of the period. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered poor (note 5/10), but its heritage interest remains undeniable.

The structure of the cross, with its altar and carved decoration, suggests a function both commemorative and liturgical. The volutes of the capital and the angel heads recall the classical influences of the Renaissance, while the representation of Christ emphasizes his religious vocation. This type of monument, frequent in medieval and reborn cemeteries, served as a place of prayer and gathering for the deceased, reflecting the piety and community organization of the time.
