Cross of 15s: inscription by order of 23 December 1925

Origin and history

The 15th century cross of Saint-Broingt-les-Fosses is a religious monument located 600 metres southwest of the village. It was erected during the 15th century, a period marked by a strong presence of Christian symbols in the French countryside. This type of cross often served as a spiritual or commemorative landmark for rural communities.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 23 December 1925, this cross is now owned by the municipality. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments underlines its heritage importance, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10). It illustrates the simple but symbolic religious architecture of the medieval Haute-Marne.

The region, then integrated into the Duchy of Burgundy or under Champagne influence, saw in these crosses a way to mark the territory and affirm the Christian faith. Their presence also reflected the social organization around parishes and pilgrimage paths, although there was nothing to indicate whether this cross had a particular function in this context.
