Sixteenth century cross, in the cemetery of the hamlet of Sarsoux (Box C 206p): inscription by decree of 12 December 1963

Origin and history

The 16th century cross of Saint-Martial-le-Vieux is a listed historical monument erected at the edge of the 15th and 16th centuries. It is distinguished by its complex architectural structure: a cubic base topped by a square table with chamfered edges, itself supporting a second base in the shape of a pyramid trunk. The circular drum, placed on a square base, is separated from the cross by a knot adorned with an oric wand and curled leaves. The arms and the rise, cylindrical and swollen, form an openwork nimbue of four lobes, framing two carved representations: the Christ crucified on one side, and the Virgin with Child on the other, sheltered under a gable decorated with a clover.

The cross is located in the cemetery of the hamlet of Sarsoux, on the commune of Saint-Martial-le-Vieux (Creuse, Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its registration as a Historic Monument by decree of 12 December 1963 underlines its heritage value. The stylized plant decoration and religious motifs reflect the funeral art of the late Middle Ages, marked by a transition to Renaissance forms. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), but its location in a rural cemetery is indicative of its initial role, probably linked to local devotion or commemoration.

Iconographically, the cross combines traditional elements — such as crucifixion and the Virgin with the Child — with architectural details innovative for the time, such as the redents forming a square nimbe. These features suggest a local order, possibly linked to a family or fraternity, although the source text does not mention any explicit sponsor. The prismatic console supporting the Virgin and the thawed gable add a late Gothic dimension, while the curly leaves evoke an evolving ornamental repertoire.

Owned by the commune, the cross is today an artistic and historical vestige, illustrating the funeral and religious practices of the Creuse at the hinge of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its state of conservation and accessibility (in the cemetery enclosure) make it a tangible testimony of the monumental art of Limousin, often marked by carved stone and Christian symbols. No information is available on any restorations or on its contemporary use (visits, cults).
