Origin and history
The cross of Vachères is a monumental stone cross erected in 1555, as evidenced by the date engraved in relief on its base. Located at the entrance of the Château de Vachères, on the commune of Présailles (Haute-Loire), it is distinguished by its style influenced by classicism, marked by pure geometric shapes and few carved characters. Its pyramidal barrel, adorned with mouldings, supports an octagonal crusillon decorated with florets, while the side faces carry a degraded Christ and a Virgin with Child.
The cross is associated with the Barbon de Cluzel, local lords whose initials "CB" appear on the monument. Since June 11, 1930, it has been part of the historical monuments, and it illustrates Renaissance religious art in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its denticulated capital and architectural details (tracing, mouldings) reflect 16th century craft techniques, while emphasizing its role as a territorial marker linked to the nearby castle.
According to Jean Chaize's descriptions, the cross is characterized by a hierarchical structure: an elevated square base, a moulure with pyramidal section, and symbolic elements such as cruciferous florets. The partially missing statuette of Christ and the Virgin to the Child recall her devotional function. Its variable state of preservation (Christ eroded, date and initials still legible) makes it a material testimony of the local history and piety of the Lords of Vachères.
