Origin and history

The cross of Daumazan-sur-Arize is a monumental carved stone cross, dating from the 15th century, located in the heart of the village in the Ariège department. It is distinguished by its eight lobes openwork structure, four of which correspond to the diagonals, and rests on a modern column placed on a square pedestal. Its two sides are finely carved: one represents Christ in a cross framed by the Virgin and St John, while the other shows the Virgin with the Child, flanked by St Catherine and St James. The moulding is adorned with rosettes, and the slice once wore florets all around.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 6 July 1907, this cross is a remarkable example of local medieval religious art. It was initially placed against the closing wall of the presbytery, highlighting its connection to parish life. Its iconography, combining Christian scenes and holy figures, reflects the popular devotions of the period in Occitanie, where the monumental crosses served both as spiritual landmarks and as identity marks for village communities.

The column supporting the cross is described as modern, suggesting a restoration or replacement after its creation. The monument now belongs to the municipality of Daumazan-sur-Arize and remains a material testimony of the artistic and religious heritage of Ariège. Its central location in the village, near the church, reinforces its historical role as a gathering point and symbol of collective faith.
