Origin and history

The cross of Agnat is a monumental cross located in the village of Agnat, in the Haute-Loire region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is located behind the bedside of Saint-Julien-l'Hospitalier Church, in a small square. Dated from the 13th or 14th century, this cross is a typical example of medieval religious architecture in the region. It consists of a square base with six steps, a round barrel and an octagonal crusillon decorated with florets and a central quadrilobe in relief.

The cross has been listed as historical monuments since 11 June 1930. It presents a notable iconography: one of its sides represents a Crucifixion with a Syriac Christ, identifiable by its crown, skirt and horizontal arms. The other side has no figurative representation. The stone cross is surmounted by a small wrought iron cross, adding to its historical and artistic character.

This monument illustrates the importance of monumental crosses in medieval villages, often placed near churches to mark a sacred place or crossroads. Its designation as a historic monument reflects its heritage value and the desire to preserve this local heritage. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status and precise location in the village of Agnat.
