Origin and history
La Croix de Tirenges is a monumental cross located in the Haute-Loire department, in the commune of Tirenges, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its raised structure from two to three steps in barely squared blocks. Its barrel rests on a prismatic base, and its crusillon carries sculptures representing, on one side, Christ surrounded by the Holy Women in worship, and on the other, an angel crowning the Virgin, the wings spread vertically.
The cross is adorned with decorative elements typical of the era, such as ecots and poorly developed terminal cabbages. These stylistic details, combined with its religious function, make it a remarkable example of Renaissance Christian art in Auvergne. Its designation as historic monuments by decree of 16 September 1949 emphasizes its heritage importance and preservation for future generations.
Located on the Place de Tiranges, at the precise address of the 9001 Chemin Saint-Régis, this cross belongs to the commune. Although its geographical accuracy is assessed as poor (level 5 out of 10), it remains a historical and cultural landmark for the region. Its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in the available sources, but its protected status guarantees its sustainability in the local landscape.
