Origin and history
The cross of Fontaine-en-Bray is an emblematic monument located in the church of the Norman village. Dated from the 16th century, it embodies the Renaissance style with its Corinthian column decorated with the list of donors. This calvary, restored in the 1870s, bears witness to the local piety and religious architecture of the time.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 5 February 1914, the stone cross became a communal property. Its precise location, 50 Rue de l'Église, and its Insee code (76269) anchor it in the Seine-Maritime department. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory (level 6/10), confirming its integration into the local heritage.
The monument reflects the artistic and religious practices of Normandy in the 16th century, a period marked by the transition between Gothic and Renaissance times. Calvary, often erected near churches, served as spiritual landmarks and gathering places for rural communities. Their decoration, like the Corinthian columns, emphasized the prestige of donors and the vitality of parishes.
