Cross (Case A 290): Order of 21 December 1984
Origin and history
The Vauhallan Cemetery Cross is a religious monument erected in the early 17th century, more precisely in 1602. It stands in the enclosure of the communal cemetery, along the road to Saclay, in the immediate vicinity of the parish church Saint-Rigomer-et-Sainte-Ténestine. This positioning suggests a central role in funeral rituals and the spiritual life of the village in modern times.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 21 December 1984, this cross illustrates the local religious architecture of the Île-de-France after the Renaissance. Its inscription in protected heritage underscores its heritage value, both artistically and historically. Today the cross belongs to the commune of Vauhallan, which ensures its conservation.
At the time of its construction, Vauhallan – like many villages in France – was marked by a rural economy and a social organization centred around the church and cemetery. The cemetery crosses then served as a spiritual landmark and place of recollection for the inhabitants, while symbolically marking the sacred space. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Catholic Counter-Reform in the region after the wars of Religion.
Available sources, including the Mérimée base and communal references, confirm its precise address at the 52 Route de Saclay in the territory of Vauhallan (Insee code 91635). No additional information is provided on its iconography, dimensions or possible restorations, although its current state appears to be documented by Creative Commons licensed photographs.
