Cross, on the Grand Place (no CADASTRE box; PUBLIC AREA): registration by order of 6 April 1972
Origin and history
The cross of Plenise is an emblematic monument located on the Grand Place of the village, in the Jura department. Dating from the 16th century, it is a typical example of monumental crosses erected in public spaces during the Renaissance, often linked to religious or commemorative functions. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 6 April 1972 underlines its heritage importance for the commune and the region.
Plénise, like many villages in Franche-Comté, was in the 16th century a rural place of life marked by agriculture, crafts and a strong community organization. Public crosses, frequent in towns and central squares, served as spiritual or legal landmarks, reflecting the influence of the Church and local lords. Their presence in the public space also symbolized social cohesion and divine protection over the community.
The location of this cross, mentioned both as being on the Grand Place and close to Rue Pasteur, indicates its anchoring in the historic heart of the village. Although the archives do not specify its sponsor or its exact use, its status as communal property and its classification attest to its collective value. Available data from sources such as Monumentum confirm its role in the Jurasian heritage landscape.
