Origin and history
The cross of Sirod, located in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a historical monument dating from the 16th century. Commonly called 'Croix des rogations', it is a typical example of the cross of paths or procession erected at that time to mark places of prayer or religious paths. Its maintenance is carried out by the Association Sirotière d'Maintenance du Patrimoine (ASEP), which shows the local attachment to this heritage.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 22 December 1933, this cross illustrates the importance of religious symbols in the Jurassian countryside in the 16th century. At that time, the crosses often served as spiritual and community landmarks, punctuating rural landscapes and pilgrimage or procession routes. Their presence also reflected the social and religious organization of the villages, where the Christian faith structured much of the collective life.
Available sources, such as the municipal bulletin of Sirod (2021) and the Merimée base, confirm its status as communal property and its inscription among the protected monuments of the Jura. The precise location, 5 Rue du Petit Crans, as well as its Insee code (39517), allow to situate it in the geographical and administrative context of the region. Its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed, but its classification guarantees legal protection against degradation.
