Cross, on the side of the road near the church: inscription by order of 15 June 1927

Origin and history

The monumental cross of Ancienville is a 16th-century stone religious building located in the commune of Ancienville in the department of Aisne (Hauts-de-France). This monument, now partially fragmented, bears witness to the architecture and local religious practices of the Renaissance. It is located near the church, on the edge of a road, and was registered as historical monuments by order of 15 June 1927.

In the 16th century, the monumental crosses played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They served as spiritual landmarks, gathering places for processions, and often marked crossroads or village entrances. In the Picardie region (now Hauts-de-France), these monuments also reflected the growing influence of Renaissance artistic styles, while retaining traditional functions related to popular devotion.

Ancienville, like many villages in Aisne, was then organized around its church and its religious symbols, which structured the social and spiritual life of the inhabitants.
