Navarrais Cross in the Cemetery (Box A1 87): inscription by order of 29 March 1971
Origin and history
The Navarre cross of Mendive is a historical monument located in the cemetery of this town of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It is distinguished by its typical shape with right arms, with a Christ engraved on one of the faces, although its head and feet have disappeared with time. The reverse of the cross presents an ostensoir decorated with two svastikas and two five-pointed stars, symbolic motifs often associated with ancient religious or cultural representations. Its drum, rectangular in shape, is slightly swollen upwards, and the whole rests on a three-stage pedestal, characteristic of the monumental crosses of this region.
The cross was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 29 March 1971, thus recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the municipality of Mendive and is located in the local cemetery, under the cadastral reference A1 87. Although its exact period of construction is not specified, its style and motifs suggest an origin related to Navarra's history, a region marked by intense cultural and religious exchanges between France and Spain.
Navarre crosses, such as Mendive's, often played a central role in community life, serving as a spiritual or memorial landmark. Their presence in cemeteries or at crossroads reflected a local tradition where these monuments marked both the sacred space and the collective identity. Svastikas, before their modern hijacking, were symbols of prosperity and protection in many cultures, including medieval Europe.
The location of this cross, although documented, remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as fair (level 5 of 10). It is located near the village of Mendive, in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. This territory, formerly attached to the historic province of Basse-Navarre, retains numerous testimonies of its medieval and religious past, of which this cross is an emblematic example.
No information is available on the craftsmen or sponsors of this cross, or on the specific circumstances of its creation. However, its registration as Historic Monuments in 1971 attests to its importance for local heritage. The engraved motifs, like the five-pointed stars, could evoke astrological or Christian influences, while the svastikas recall pre-Christian symbols often reinterpreted in medieval religious art.
The Navarre cross of Mendive is part of a wider set of similar monuments scattered in the south-west of France, notably in Lower Navarre. These crosses, often erected near churches or cemeteries, served as gathering points for religious ceremonies or processions. Their preservation now allows us to study the cultural and artistic practices of rural communities in the past, as well as symbolic exchanges between border regions.
