Origin and history
The cross of Rue de la Boucherie in Limoges is a monumental stone cross dating back to the 15th century. It is located in front of the chapel Saint-Aurelien, in the city centre of Limoges, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This monument, typical of medieval Christian architecture, bears witness to the importance of religious symbols in urban space at that time.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 8 July 1910, this cross has a history linked to the French Revolution. Originally located in the convent of the Grand Carmelites of Limoges, it was acquired by the brotherhood of butchers during the Revolution. This transfer illustrates the social and heritage upheavals of this period, when many ecclesiastical goods were redistributed.
Today, the cross is located at the corner of Rue de la Boucherie and Place Saint-Aurelien. It belongs to an association and remains a significant part of the limo heritage. Its current location, in front of a chapel, recalls its initial role as a spiritual and community landmark in the city.
