Origin and history

La Croix Saint-Roch is a 14th-century medieval cross in the commune of Pesmes, Haute-Saône department. It has been classified as historical monuments since 1977. According to the sources, it would come from the old graveyard of the pestiférés, which lay around the chapel Saint-Roch. An illegible inscription appears on the reverse side of the cross, but its exact content remains unknown.

The exact location of the cross is indicated at the corner of Gray Road and CD 15, near Rue des Loups. This monument, owned by the commune, bears witness to the local history of plague epidemics in the Middle Ages. Its classification in 1977 underlines its heritage importance, although its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in available sources.

The region of Pesmes, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was in the fourteenth century marked by health and social crises, especially the black plague. Cemeteries dedicated to pests, such as those associated with this cross, were often located on the outskirts of villages to isolate the sick. These monuments also served as religious and memorial landmarks for communities affected by these scourges.
