Sculpted cross, close to the south side of the former church of Notre-Dame de Bordagain (cad. not cadastre): inscription by order of 28 April 1987
Origin and history
The carved cross of Ciboure is a monument located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is precisely rue de la Tour, close to the south side of the old church of Notre-Dame de Bordagain. This monument, owned by the commune, was included in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 28 April 1987.
No further information on its origin or history is available from the sources consulted. The carved crosses, frequent in rural and coastal areas such as the Basque Country, often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks for local communities. In Ciboure, as in other villages of New Aquitaine, these monuments generally reflected popular piety and could mark places of assembly or pilgrimage paths.
Their presence was also linked to dominant agricultural or maritime activities, structuring the social and religious life of the inhabitants.
