Cross (Case B 65): Order of 11 July 1973
Origin and history
The cross on the edge of CD 296 in Vesvres-sous-Chalancey is a 18th-century religious monument. It has been classified as a Historic Monument since July 11, 1973, according to data from the Merimée database. This type of cross, typical of the French countryside, often served as a spiritual or commemorative landmark for local communities.
Vesvres-sous-Chalancey, a commune of Haute-Marne in the Grand-Est region, was at that time a rural town marked by agricultural and craft activities. The road crosses, like this one, played a strong symbolic role, marking the boundaries of parishes, crossroads or serving as points of prayer for travelers and inhabitants. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Catholic religion in the social and cultural organization of the villages.
