Cromlech d'Arluxatta (cad. C 828p): by order of 25 January 1957

Origin and history

The Cromlech d'Arluxatta is a megalithic monument located in the town of Itxassou in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. Dated from the Protohistory, it bears witness to the funeral or ritual practices of ancient societies in this region. This type of structure, composed of stones erected in a circle, was often associated with collective uses, although its exact role is sometimes enigmatic for archaeologists.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 25 January 1957, the cromlech is now owned by the municipality of Itxassou. Its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allows it to be located approximately thanks to GPS coordinates, although no specific address is detailed beyond Insee code 64279. The site does not have practical information about its visit or access to available sources.

The Protohistory, a pivotal period between the Bronze Age and Antiquity, sees megalithic constructions such as cromlechs develop in the south-west of France. These monuments, often linked to religious or social practices, mark the landscape and reflect the organization of the communities of the time. Their preservation, like that of Arluxatta, allows us to study these missing civilizations.
